Overview

Tour Highlights:

• A 19th-century scholar’s castle reveals a father’s grief — he lost his daughter of 19 and spent the rest of his life trying to reach her from beyond the grave, designing every room around séances and spiritualist rituals.
• A crumbling aristocratic manor shows what Romanian nobility dreamed of before communism stripped it away.
• You’ll stand where Vlad the Impaler actually ruled — not the Dracula of Hollywood, but the real 15th-century warlord whose brutal methods kept the Ottomans at bay.
• And a Brâncovenesc lakeside palace closes the day with beauty and tragedy — a dynasty’s violent end at Ottoman hands.

Zoom In

• Hasdeu Castle, Câmpina Built in the late 19th century by scholar B.P. Hasdeu as a spiritualist temple after the death of his daughter Iulia. The castle was designed for séances, with esoteric symbols throughout. One of the least-visited and most emotionally charged buildings in Romania.
• Little Trianon, Florești (Prahova) A neo-classical manor built by Romanian boyar families in deliberate imitation of Versailles — a statement of cultural aspiration that communism later stripped and time has slowly reclaimed. Today its crumbling elegance tells a story Peleș never could: what happened to the aristocratic dream in Eastern Europe after 1947.
• Târgoviște Princely Court & Chindia Tower: The 15th-century seat of Wallachian rulers. See the Chindia Tower built during Vlad the Impaler’s reign and the ruins of the court where he held power. Your guide tells the real political story — no vampire mythology, just medieval power and survival.
• Mogoșoaia Palace A 17th-century lakeside palace in the Brâncovenesc style, built by Constantin Brâncoveanu — Lord of Wallachia and Martyr of Christianity — who was later executed with his four sons by the Ottomans in 1714. Set on a tranquil lake with parkland, it is one of the most beautiful undervisited palaces in Romania.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vlad the Impaler was the 15th century Prince of Wallachia whose methods of punishing enemies — mass impalement — made him one of the most feared rulers in medieval Europe and the distant inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula. Unlike Bran Castle, which trades on fictional association, Târgoviște’s Princely Court is where Vlad actually lived, ruled and held court. The Chindia Tower, built during his reign, still stands and offers views over the original palace grounds. Your guide tells the real political story — Ottoman pressure, Wallachian survival, brutal deterrence — which is far more compelling than the vampire myth.

Hasdeu Castle in Câmpina was built by the 19th century Romanian scholar, writer and polymath Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu following the death of his daughter Iulia at age 19. Devastated by her loss, Hasdeu became obsessed with spiritualism and designed the castle as a literal temple for communicating with the dead — incorporating esoteric symbols, a séance room and spaces dedicated to Iulia’s memory throughout. It is one of the most emotionally charged and architecturally unique buildings in Romania, and one of the least visited by international tourists. Your guide walks you through both Hasdeu’s extraordinary life and the personal grief that produced this remarkable place.

The Little Trianon is a 19th-century neo-classical manor built by a Romanian aristocratic family in conscious imitation of the Petit Trianon at Versailles — a statement of wealth and European aspiration in a region then emerging from Ottoman influence. Today the building stands in romantic ruin, stripped by communism and slowly reclaimed by time. It is not a restored palace with guided interiors — it is something rarer: an honest remnant, where the ambition of a vanished class is still readable in the architecture despite the decay. For travelers drawn to atmosphere over spectacle, it is one of the most quietly compelling stops on the tour.

Mogoșoaia brings the day full circle. Built by Constantin Brâncoveanu in the early 18th century in the graceful Brâncovenesc style — a Romanian synthesis of Byzantine, Ottoman and Renaissance influences — it represents a dynasty at the height of its creative ambition. Yet Brâncoveanu and his four sons were taken to Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1714 and publicly executed when he refused to convert to Islam. The palace survived him by centuries, set on a tranquil lake surrounded by parkland. It is one of the most beautiful and undervisited palaces in Romania, and its story closes the tour’s theme perfectly: obsession with beauty, interrupted by history.

The tour lasts approximately 10 to 12 hours and includes private car or minivan transportation with hotel pick-up/drop-off in Bucharest, an experienced guide, and entrance tickets to all sites. The day includes a lunch stop at a local restaurant, not included in the tour price. Given the number of stops and the distances involved, this is a full day out of Bucharest — plan accordingly and wear comfortable footwear.
