Do I need a visa to visit Romania as a US citizen?

US citizens do not need a visa to visit Romania for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Romania joined the Schengen Area in 2024, so your Schengen entry count applies. All you need is a valid US passport — valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date. No advance paperwork or embassy visit is required.

Will my phone work in Romania, and can I get data without paying US roaming rates?

Wi-Fi is widely available and free throughout Romania — in hotels, restaurants, cafés, and most tourist sites — so staying connected is rarely a problem. However, if you prefer mobile data on the go, we highly recommend getting a local eSIM rather than relying on your US carrier’s international roaming plan, which can be significantly more expensive. If your phone supports eSIM (most modern iPhones and Android devices do), we can provide you with a local Romanian eSIM with flexible data plans at a fraction of what US carriers charge. What is the best time of year to visit Romania?

What currency is used in Romania, and should I bring cash?

Romania uses the Romanian Leu (RON), not the Euro. ATMs are widely available in cities and larger towns, and most hotels, restaurants, and shops accept major credit cards.
