Frequently Asked Question

The Muddy Volcanoes — Vulcanii Noroiosi — at Berca in Buzau County are one of Romania’s most extraordinary natural phenomena. Natural gas forces mud up from approximately 3,000 metres below the earth’s surface, creating dozens of bubbling, erupting miniature volcanoes that cover a lunar-like landscape unlike anything else in Europe. The area looks like a scene from another planet — constantly shifting, bubbling and reforming. It is a fully protected natural reserve and one of the most memorable and photogenic stops on any tour in Romania.

The Slanic Prahova Salt Mine descends 217 metres below the surface — one of the deepest accessible salt mines in Europe. Inside you will find 14 enormous chambers with ceilings reaching 55 metres high, carved entirely from salt over centuries of mining dating back to 1685. The mine maintains a constant temperature and a unique therapeutic microclimate that is beneficial for respiratory conditions. The scale and atmosphere underground are truly awe-inspiring — many visitors describe it as one of the most unexpected experiences of their Romania trip.

The tour runs approximately 10 hours and includes private car or minivan transportation with hotel pick-up in Bucharest, an experienced guide, and a refreshment drink and coffee or tea. The drive passes through the scenic rolling hills and vineyards of the Buzau region. Entrance tickets to the Salt Mine and Muddy Volcanoes are not included and are paid separately on the day. Personal expenses and meals are also not included.

For the Salt Mine, bring a light jacket or layer — the temperature underground is a constant cool regardless of the season. For the Muddy Volcanoes, wear shoes you don’t mind getting muddy and clothing appropriate for outdoor walking on uneven terrain. The landscape around the volcanoes is dry and dusty in summer, so sunscreen and a hat are also recommended. A camera or charged phone is essential — both locations are extraordinarily photogenic.

The tour is suitable for most ages and fitness levels. Children tend to love both the underground world of the Salt Mine and the alien-like landscape of the Muddy Volcanoes. For older or less mobile travellers, the Salt Mine has lifts and accessible pathways. The Muddy Volcanoes involve some uneven walking on open terrain — please let us know in advance of any mobility requirements and we will advise on the best approach for your group.
