Overview

You have just landed in Romania, the last country to exit the Iron Curtain of Soviet influence in the late 80’s after the Revolution in Dec 1989.

At least this is what the travel guides say.

Under Soviet Communist rule since WW2, the people of Romania lived for more than 20 years under Ceausescu’s regime, in the so-called Golden Era, coping with the oppression of freedom, censorship and even food deprivation in the last years of the regime. Despite these facts, some Romanians still look back at the life under the rule of the last Dictator of Europe with melancholia and regret.

The known facts nowadays are that in December 1989, the Romanian people stood up and started the Revolution that would end in Ceausescu’s demise. Some enigmas remain and so far, some of the questions surrounding those events remained unanswered.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tour investigates the key questions that still surround Romania’s Communist era — was Ceausescu a nationalist leader or a megalomaniac dictator? Was the 1989 Revolution spontaneous or organised in advance by hidden forces? Was his execution necessary or a cover-up? You will visit the sites where history was made — the Spring Palace, the People’s House, Revolution Square, the Communist Party Headquarters, the State Security HQ and the Dictator’s grave — while your guide pieces together the evidence with you. Each guest receives a Personal Investigation Dossier to collect their own findings.

Yes — the Spring Palace guided inside visit is included Tuesday through Sunday. Please note the Spring Palace is closed on Mondays, Romania’s official weekly museum rest day. If your tour falls on a Monday, your guide will arrange an alternative visit of equal interest — such as the Palace of Parliament — to ensure a full and rewarding experience.

The tour runs 4 to 5 hours and includes private car or minivan transportation, an experienced guide, a refreshment drink and coffee or tea, photo and written testimonials, and your Personal Investigation Dossier. Entrance tickets for the Spring Palace guided tour are not included and are paid on the day. The tour starts with pick-up from your centrally located hotel in Bucharest.

No prior knowledge is needed at all. Your guide begins by setting the historical scene — from Romania’s entry into the Soviet sphere after World War II through to the build-up of Ceausescu’s regime and the dramatic events of December 1989. The tour is designed to be fully self-contained, engaging for complete beginners and fascinating for history enthusiasts alike. Many guests tell us it completely changed their understanding of Cold War Europe.

The tour is suitable for teenagers and older — the subject matter covers political oppression, censorship, the secret police and the events of the 1989 revolution, which includes some sobering content. For younger children we would recommend the Bucharest Highlights or Village Museum tour instead. Our guides are skilled at adjusting the depth and tone of the narrative to suit the age and interests of each private group.
