Transylvania Private Tour 2 Days Itinerary:

Day 1 — Into the Heart of Transylvania

First, we visit Peleș Castle in Sinaia. We explore the royal apartments, the armory hall, and the great central atrium. Subsequently, we drive to the Brașov Historical Centre. There, we visit the Gothic Black Church and the narrow Rope Street.

Afterward, we stop at Rupea Fortress. This hilltop citadel offers sweeping views over the Transylvanian landscape. Finally, we enjoy a scenic evening arrival in Sighișoara for our overnight stay.

Day 2 — The Living Citadel & the Saxon Villages

We begin with a walking tour of the Sighișoara Citadel. We visit the Clock Tower and the house where Vlad the Impaler was born. Next, we explore Viscri Saxon Village. We walk through the village and visit the fortified church that King Charles III helped restore.

Following this, we visit Bran Castle. We discuss the Dracula connection and the real history of Vlad. Finally, we begin our return journey to Bucharest through the picturesque Prahova Valley.

Meeting and Pick-up

Not exactly — and the real story is far more interesting than the myth. Bram Stoker, who wrote Dracula in 1897, never actually visited Romania. He based his fictional castle on descriptions he read in travel books, and Bran’s dramatic silhouette — a fortress perched on a rocky cliff — matched his imagination closely enough that the association stuck. Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure behind the Dracula legend, was a fifteenth-century Wallachian prince known for his brutal methods of punishing enemies. He may have passed through the Bran area, but he never lived in the castle. What you will find inside is a genuine medieval fortress with a fascinating royal history — Bran later became a summer residence of Queen Marie of Romania, and her personality is all over the interior. We visit it for what it truly is, with the full story told along the way.

Viscri is the kind of place that stops you in your tracks. It is a Saxon village that has remained almost entirely unchanged for centuries — the same dirt lanes, the same painted farmhouses, the same fortified church rising above the rooftops just as it did when the Saxon settlers built it in the twelfth century. There are no souvenir shops, no tour buses pulling up every twenty minutes. What King Charles III recognised when he first visited in 1998 was that Viscri represented something extraordinarily rare — an intact way of life that was quietly disappearing. He bought and restored a traditional Saxon house in the village and has returned many times since, helping to put Viscri on the map for preservation funding and responsible tourism. We walk through the village, visit the fortified church with its centuries of history written into its walls, and see the house he restored. It is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave Romania.

It is absolutely worth it — and this is one of the reasons we built the overnight into the tour. During the day, Sighișoara’s Citadel fills up with visitors. By early evening, they are gone, and the place becomes something else entirely. The cobblestone streets go quiet, the coloured medieval houses glow in the last light, and you have one of Europe’s most extraordinary historic towns almost to yourself. Sighișoara is the only medieval citadel in Europe that has been continuously inhabited since it was built — people still live, work and go to school inside its walls. Spending the night there rather than rushing through on a day trip is the difference between ticking a box and actually experiencing the place.

Each season has a strong case. Summer — June through August — gives you long days, green Transylvanian landscapes and Sighișoara’s famous Medieval Festival in July if your dates align. Autumn is arguably the most beautiful, with the forests around Sinaia and the Carpathian foothills turning deep red and gold from late September through October, and the crowds thinning noticeably after the school holidays. Winter brings snow to Peleș Castle and Sighișoara’s Citadel, which look genuinely magical under a layer of white — and Bran Castle takes on an entirely different atmosphere in the cold. Spring, from April onwards, is fresh and uncrowded, with the mountain air clean and the valleys starting to green up. The only period I would approach with some caution is January and February, when mountain roads can be affected by heavy snow — though we always monitor conditions and adjust the route when needed.

The one-day Transylvania tours you will find all over Bucharest follow a similar pattern — Peleș, Bran, a quick stop in Brașov, back to Bucharest by evening. It is a long day of driving, the stops are rushed, and you cover a lot of ground without truly landing anywhere. This tour is built around the opposite idea.
