Best Trips from Bucharest - Peles Castle

People often arrive in Bucharest with a few days to spare and the same question: “What can I see outside the city?” My honest answer: more than you’d ever expect. Within two hours of Bucharest, you’ll find fairy-tale castles, ancient salt mines, Orthodox monasteries, Roman ruins on the Black Sea, and natural landscapes that feel completely removed from the modern world.

After more than a decade guiding visitors through Romania, these are the day trips I personally love most — and the ones our guests rave about most on TripAdvisor.

1. Transylvanian Castles: Peles, Bran & Brasov

This is our most popular full-day excursion — and it earns that status every single time. Peles Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in all of Europe: a Neo-Renaissance masterpiece set in the Carpathian foothills, built for King Carol I and filled with stained glass, carved wood, and stories of Romanian royalty.

Then there’s Bran Castle — yes, Dracula’s Castle — perched dramatically on a clifftop in Transylvania. The Dracula connection is more legend than history, but the castle itself is genuinely spectacular and worth every photograph. We finish in Brasov, a medieval Saxon city with a charming Old Town that feels like stepping back 600 years.

2. Mystical Monasteries, Dracula’s Tomb & Mogosoaia Palace

If you want something more intimate and less touristy, this is the trip for you. We visit Orthodox monasteries hidden in the Wallachian countryside, the lakeside Mogosoaia Palace — a Brancovan-style gem that most tourists never find — and the monastery where Vlad the Impaler (the real Dracula) is said to be buried. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and utterly Romanian.

3. Earth Explorers: Salt Mine & Muddy Volcanoes

This one surprises people the most. Slanic Prahova salt mine is enormous — think underground cathedrals carved out of pink and white salt, complete with a lake and a sports court inside. Then we head to the Muddy Volcanoes of Buzau, a unique geological phenomenon where small mud volcanoes bubble and belch in an otherworldly moonscape. There’s nothing quite like it in the world.

4. Constanta & the Black Sea

Romania has a coastline — and Constanta is its crown jewel. Founded by the ancient Greeks and later a major Roman port, it has one of the best archaeological museums in Eastern Europe, a charming old town, and that unmistakable energy of a port city by the sea. Perfect if you want history with a breeze.
